Sense of belonging is feeling accepted, supported and connected to a group or community. It’s crucial for mental and emotional wellbeing.

Example: Participating in a student organization that aligns with your interests and values, creating bonds with others.

Practical Skills to Try

  • Join Campus Activities. Get involved in student organizations or events that resonate with your interests.
  • Initiate Conversations. Take the first step in making connections by introducing yourself and showing genuine interest in others.
  • Volunteer. Engage in service opportunities to connect with like-minded individuals and contribute to your community.

Office of Student Volunteerism

The Office of Student Volunteerism (OSV) is committed to enriching the lives of UT Dallas students through engagement opportunities and utilizing them as resources to address the immediate and long-term needs of our local, global, and campus communities through service, reflection, education, and partnerships.


Conflict Resolution

Conflict resolution involves resolving disputes in a constructive manner that benefits all parties involved. It includes active listening, empathy and finding common ground.

Example:  Discussing a disagreement with a roommate in a calm and respectful manner to find a compromise.

Practical Skills to Try

  • Active Listening. Practice listening to understand, not to respond. Focus on the other person’s perspective without interrupting.
  • Use “I” Statements. Express your feelings without blaming others, such as “I feel frustrated when…”
  • Seek Win-Win Solutions. Look for compromises that address the needs of both parties involved in the conflict.

Healthy Relationships

Healthy relationships are built on trust, mutual respect, communication and boundaries. They contribute to emotional and social wellbeing.

Example: A healthy romantic relationship where both partners communicate openly, respect each other’s boundaries and support one another’s growth.

Practical Skills to Try

  • Clear Communication. Practice open, honest communication about your needs, feelings and boundaries.
  • Respect Boundaries. Honor the boundaries of others and ensure your own boundaries are respected.
  • Quality Time. Spend intentional quality time with those you care about to nurture your relationships.

Navigating Resources

Navigating resources involves understanding and utilizing available support services, including counseling, health services, academic assistance and social groups.

Example: Seeking guidance from a campus counselor when feeling overwhelmed with academic or personal challenges.

Practical Skills to Try

  • Know Your Resources. Familiarize yourself with campus resources like counseling, health services and academic support.
  • Ask for Help. Don’t hesitate to reach out to a counselor or adviser if you need support or guidance.
  • Peer Support Groups. Join support groups or student organizations that align with your needs or interests.

Basic Needs Resource Center

The Basic Needs Resource Center connects students with on- and off-campus resources and services in areas such as housing and food insecurity, clothing, pregnancy and parenting support and short-term emergency aid.
